What is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is a several-thousand-year-old science which originated in China. It is based on the concept that one should have a healthy flow of energy throughout the body. Acupuncture involves inserting very thin needles along meridians in the skin which are considered pathways for this energy, or Qi. These meridians, and their associated energy, are thought to be unblocked by the insertion of the needle, thus bringing balance to the body.

An acupuncturist will sometimes use electrical stimulation to further enhance the outcome and open the pathways. Acupuncture is most commonly used to treat pain but can also be used for a variety of other conditions ranging from anxiety to infertility. Acupuncture is often recommended as an alternative treatment modality for patients in any type of pain.
